Gap Semester
A postgraduate semester is available for any qualified student who has completed high school and would like to continue with education and travel. A post-graduate semester combines independent academic study, academic coursework and work-study experience. This semester provides directed independent academic study, participation in several courses, and work experience and training for students who wish to enter the alternative education/ outdoor leadership industry.
Independent academic study:
An independent project is the main focus for the postgraduate student. Students choose an area of specialty and design a semester project based around that specialty. Students are supervised and graded by a qualified instructor. Students are expected to spend a minimum of 2 hours each school day working on the independent project, for a total of the equivalent of 3 college credit hours. Students are expected to spend additional time studying and working on the project during study hall.
Academic Coursework Requirements:
All post-graduate students are required to participate in the Global Studies and Physical Education Courses. These students must also choose two additional courses from the required curriculum for credit. It is possible to apply for college credit for these courses. Please refer to the Student Handbook or website for specific course descriptions.
Work Study Experience: At times, postgraduate students may be asked to assist with logistics to support the teachers and the workings of the program. Other duties may include: organizing and participating with group activities; developing and teaching outdoor leadership skills; planning and organizing activities as needed; working as a member of a team; demonstrating strong time management skills; and thoughtful decision making. A qualified faculty member of the school shall provide supervision for the postgraduate student.
