About Mail

Communication can be one of the most frustrating aspects of sending your daughter overseas, yet getting mail to your daughter need not be a stressful or futile activity.  Here are a few suggestions to help you successfully keep in contact with your daughter while overseas:

  1. Mail early.  Plan ahead and mail letters early to ensure they are waiting for your daughter when we arrive in a city.  TTS will specify mail pickup addresses and dates for each semester.  Give mail at least three weeks to arrive to its international destination

  1. Mail only paper letters, magazine articles and/ or photographs – no additional items.  When you haven’t seen your daughter for several months, the inclination is to send as large a package as you possibly can.  While this is an understandable, please respect that these packages end up being a hassle for your daughter. If you decide to mail something aside from paper inside of a regular envelope, your daughter may have to pay quite a lot of money to pick-up the package.

Often, the packages don’t arrive at all, which leads the girls to a sad cycle of disappointment when they watch their friends open their envelopes, and they realize their package was lost.  Please send flat envelopes to ensure timely delivery of overseas correspondences.

  1. Think about what you send.  Please be thoughtful in what you send your daughter.  Students love to get photos of their family and friends, CD mixes (if they have a CD player), handwritten notes and cards, and articles about local events. Our American inclination is to send material items to show our love.  After being overseas, the girls often go through a process where they enjoy having minimal possessions, especially when they begin to understand how much more they have compared with local people. What the girls really need when they are traveling are slow, thought-out expressions of love from home – collages from friends, hand-written letters, and news from home.  These are so valuable to the girls and they’ll sincerely appreciate the time you’ve given to mail something – and it need not be something purchased.
